Ice Chip #23
Success Story for Empowering Word Choice
I would like to share an ongoing, powerful, Remember the Ice success story.
In October 2008, I met Cornelis de Maijer from Hoogland, The Netherlands. Cornelis is a Black Star member of the social/business networking website: www.ecademy.com. He was using the search mechanism to find a fellow member with a background in: “Positive Word Choice”. Lo and behold, there was a direct match when he typed the key words into the search window. Yours truly matched the request, and Cornelis read my profile on Ecademy: http://www.ecademy.com/account.php?id=281004 In a Skype conversation a few days after first reading my profile, Cornelis said, “Bob, Remember the Ice is such a simple, yet powerful concept to help me with my word choice.”
“In my previous content on my website, I had some poisonous words,” he said. He was using (k)notty words in his content. Specifically, he had this statement:
Don’t forget to book early.
One simple sentence with a misguided message had a profound impact on his bookings through the years. He was gaining a modest 12-15% increase in bookings for his sailing yachts on the Mediterranean Sea off the Turkish coast. The same disempowering words were on his brochure as well.
After being introduced to Remember the Ice and reviewing the free workbook available on my website: www.remembertheice.com he changed his wording to:
“Remember to book early, and experience the difference!”
(You can learn more about his cruises at: www.flaka.nl/)
This season marks number 14 for Cornelis in the sailing yacht business, and it has become his most productive. As of mid July, his increase in bookings has topped 165% AND he has already secured 7 bookings for 2010. On a recent Skype call, Cornelis shared, “Bob, booking for the next year in advance is something new for us… and I like it very much!! Being in the seasonal leisure/tourism business, advanced bookings for the next season, the next year is very special; and as far as I understand from my colleagues, they have to put forth a lot of effort in gaining “repeat” or early bookings by their clients.
The exciting part for me, as the creator of Remember the Ice as an empowering word choice program, is how fast Cornelis experienced results. There are two areas where he made changes and had success.
1. He changed the (k)notty words from “Don’t forget” to “Remember to book early”.
2. He embraced the concept of eradicating the (k)notty words in his written and spoken conversations on a daily basis. He got involved with the program, and made changes.
The great thing is that he continues to be excited about using Remember the Ice, and his wife and children are catching on as well. Cornelis is a continuing success story. If you would like to talk with him, I invite you to email him at: c.demaijer@planet.nl or contact him on Skype at: flakacruisingeurope
Let him share his enthusiasm for Remember the Ice and how it has enhanced his business and his personal life.

Chips to consider…..
Take a few moments to ponder each one of these Chips…. Consider the enhanced results you will have in your communication skills and your accomplishing skills by implementing some of these. Enjoy.
Empowering word choice is one key to your personal power.
Your sense of personal power, confidence, and self-esteem are wrapped up in how well you are able to communicate your thoughts, needs, ideas and desires.
When you articulate clearly and successfully, everything else falls into place. When the details fall into place, they make room for new or expanded ideas.
Poor word choice is a serious obstacle to clear communication and diminishes your personal power.
Imagine how much more power and confidence you would have in your life if you could consistently get your message across clearly.
How empowering do you think it would be to know that your words influence and inspire, rather than confuse and annoy?
The good news is that you already have everything you need. It’s just a matter of understanding the how and why of organizing and using your words, and putting it all into practice.
Not, don’t, can’t, won’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t, shouldn’t are the key “(k)notty” words you want to eradicate from your written and verbal communication.
The challenge with (k)nots is that their purpose is to invert a sentence and make it mean its opposite. They turn the message inside out and upside down, befuddling the listener.
Pay attention to your message and use words that make your statement clean and clear; twisting it into (k)nots serves no purpose.
I believe that word choice is the beginning of everything. It is the key that unlocks what we are thinking, and the key that unlocks what we want to say.
Have an extraordinary week,
Best regards,
Bob

Welcome to your weekly Remember the Ice Chip.
Checking the pulse.
For several years now I have been a fan of one of the most epic sporting events held in the month of July. The chase for the “Maillot Jaune” – the famous Yellow Jersey of Le Tour de France. By the way, I want to wish a Happy Bastille Day to my friends in France.
The cyclists demonstrate an attention to detail as they traverse the 2000 plus miles of French countryside, with an occasional trip into neighboring countries. The flatlands lead to magnificent mountain peaks and back to the Champs Elysees for a fantastic finish. The combination of persistence and stamina required for this annual event is said to be similar to running a marathon a day for three weeks.
They keep track of their progress in several ways. One of them is to keep “checking their pulse.”
As a reader of the Ice Chips, you have begun to investigate your own tour of empowering word choice. I would like to suggest you check your articulation pulse as you share your written and spoken messages. Just like the cyclists have their daily rituals of training, you have ones of identifying the (k)notty words and coming up with empowering alternatives.
A local client in Anchorage has asked me to create a “flash card” of empowering words that they can use regularly following an upcoming seminar for their staff. The main focus is simply to eradicate the “(k)nots” and replace them with empowering words.
In Remember the Ice, we identify the main culprits as:
Not and the Hit List Six.
Not
Don’t
Can’t
Won’t
Wouldn’t
Couldn’t
Shouldn’t
For your new ritual of using empowering word choice, I would like to suggest the following: Re-Framing Five -
Do
Can
Will
Would
Could
Just remove the (k)notty words altogether, and substitute the Re-Framing Five when appropriate.
Notice I have eliminated the words “should and shouldn’t”. Neither offers much value in terms of being empowering. (For more comments on this, I refer you to Chapter 3 of Remember the Ice and Other Paradigm Shifts)
So, here we are with a simple act of checking your articulation pulse. As you compose your message internally, stop. Do you have any (k)notty words? Re-Frame them. Use one of the Re-Framing Five. Simply restate your message from an empowering point of view and experience the enhanced results.
Have a phenomenal week, and share your new insights with me,
Best regards,
Bob

It is a journey…
Working on the prospect of eradicating (k)notty words from your written and spoken word is a journey. Where are you on that journey?
This is the valley we live in here in Eagle River, Alaska. Just about 15 miles northeast of Anchorage, it is a beautiful and breathtaking view. I love to come here to renew my vision of what I want to accomplish with: Remember the Ice.
In the photograph below, the goal is to travel from the point the photo was taken,
and get to the top of the furthest mountain in the distance.
It is several miles and there are many valleys and peaks between the points mentioned.
It would be nice to just soar over to it, with the ease of our friend, Jonathan Livingston…..
Getting to the point of sharing this message on a global scale has been an arduous task. At first there were naysayers who doubted that it would make an impact.
“How are you going to get a message like that to connect with others?”
“What makes you think they will ‘get it’?”
It is a powerful message that is shared by a simple and compelling story. We have gone over it several times. That is important, because as we shared in last week’s Ice Chip: Repetition is the mother of skill. When I learned that mantra several years ago from Tony Robbins, I knew it would be relevant for the rest of my life.
Last week, you were asked to choose one of the following (k)notty words: don’t, can’t or won’t and refrain from using it. How did you do?
Was it as easy as just soaring over to the goal? I would imagine it was a bit more challenging than that.
You were catching yourself rephrasing and reframing the words and focusing on what you wanted to attract, or wanted to have happen. You were focusing on stating your case with clarity.
Excellent work.
As a result of doing so, it felt like you were at a special place…..
…..at the end of a…..
What a great place to be.
Using empowering word choice and eradicating the knotty words is like finding that pot of gold in the art of articulation.
Keep working at it. It is a task that is as important as breathing.
Remember to follow through and be fully engaged.
Have a phenomenal week,
Bob
P.S. I will be adding pictures from time to time if they help to tell the story. Thank you for indulging me and the requests of several regular readers.
