How many (K)notty Words could be attached to a Cardiac Hiccup?
About sixteen hours after I published last week’s Ice Chip, I was blessed with a Cardiac Hiccup. I found out I have a genetic heart situation and since it is always easier to deal with what we do know instead of what we are unfamiliar with; I embraced the conversation with my doctor and am glad to know what I am dealing with.
As I recovered Wednesday afternoon from having stents #2 and #3 inserted in one of my major arteries to change the paradigm of the 100% blockage to now open for a regular flow; I was mindful of the possibilities of my thought process and word choice.
After years of training myself to look at LIFE as an opportunity to Live In Full Experience, a question came to mind: How many (K)notty Words do you think could work their way into your mind if you knew you had just had your THIRD episode with a Cardiac Hiccup?
Recap:
Nancy had just come home from work. It was 6PM and I was experiencing the vise grip experience of a blocked artery. The sensation is powerful and can stop one in their tracks. I knew I needed to take action.
I calmly looked at my wife and said: “Honey, I think you better decide what you want to wear to the hospital as I am getting ready to call 911.”
4 minutes later, I was on my way to the hospital in an ambulance and Nancy followed. The paramedics stabilized me and I began to think about the things I still wanted to experience and accomplish; and how I could by gaining more information about taking better care of myself and being a better student of Heart Disease.
A week later, I am excited about us getting on an airplane later today to go see our grandchildren for Christmas! What a blessing to have the gift of LIFE and the gift of FAMILY!
Thanks to my trust in empowering word choice, I avoided getting wrapped up in “Shoulding” on myself; “Don’ting” and “Can’ting” profusely and being a “But”-head!
So hear is my question for all of us: What if we just decided to eradicate each of the “(K)notty Words” permanently? (Even if just for 24 hours?) What do you think the impact would be?
Let me know your thoughts.

Ice Chip #98
Recently I presented a keynote talk for a large Financial Services Company here in Anchorage. It was fun to share over 40 examples of signs with “(K)notty Words” as evidence of the work that needs to be done for an Articulation Proofer.
Would you like to join me? Help me with this task of enhancing the word choice used on billboards, marketing materials, emails and of course – in speaking?
Well here are several examples to get started with.
Have you noticed how some municipalities, political parties, resorts, governmental agencies, office supply stores, business associations, banks, investment firms, accounting firms and charitable organizations use “(K)notty Words” to separate themselves from the rest of their peers?
Only to have the message misunderstood.
Take a look at these and see what happens when the “(K)notty Words” is removed. (Seems to give the opposite message…….)
Here you go:

Think about these messages. What do they want to convey?
When you want to set yourself apart; make sure to focus on what it is that makes you different. Let us know you are setting a new standard and raising the bar.
Most importantly, tell us what you want us to REMEMBER about you; or REMEMBER to do.
So here you are with your task. How would you Re-Frame the messages?
Have Fun and Have an empowering word choice week!
Empowering Regards,
Bob
P.S. Only 1 more Ice Chip to get to #100!
Ice Chip #97
Greetings from Las Vegas!!
(I am here for an International Conference of Air Shows as a member of the Alaska Air Show Association Board of Directors. Nice to get to some sun and temperatures above freezing in December!)
Let’s have some fun with these photos I took in the gym I use. As usual, my question is:
How would you re-frame the messages on each of these posters?
What are the messages you are using to motivate you on your journey to demonstrate excellence in your exercising?
Hope you are enjoying your cerebral workouts with eradicating the “(K)notty Words”
Be on the lookout for a special announcement as we approach the 100th Ice Chip.
See you next week,
Empowering Regards,
Ice Chip #96
Untangling the "(K)notty Words" is my passion. Helping others do the same is my purpose. The following story best explains my heart....
...The Whale...
If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale that had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines.
She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them.
Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same. May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude. I pass this on to you, my friends, in the same spirit.
Wishing you and yours a bounty of Thanksgiving and warm Empowering Regards,
Bob
P.S. Thank you Shirley Black for sending the above story to my wife who then forwarded it on to me.
One more note: I know some of you are receiving your Ice Chip with just the word "Greetings" at the top. If this is the case, would you please email me your first name, and I will make sure it is added to our list so you can receive the Chip properly, addressed to you. Thank you!
